CLI, MCP and Shortcuts

Drive ZumCast from Terminal, an AI assistant like Claude, Siri or the Shortcuts app.

Install the command

In Settings › General › Command line & AI agents, press Install zumcast command… and enter your Mac password. Then, in Terminal:

Add --json for output scripts can read. Free plan limits apply on the command line too.

Connect an AI assistant (MCP)

ZumCast includes an MCP server, so assistants like Claude can record, edit with Zumi, take shots and export, all on your Mac.

  1. In Settings › General, press Copy MCP config.
  2. Paste it into your assistant’s MCP settings (for example Claude Desktop’s config file). It looks like this:

The tools cover projects and recording (list_projects, search, start_recording, stop_recording), Zumi (zumi_plan, zumi_apply), exports (export_video, export_all, polish, export_captions), guides and transcripts, zooms, shots (shot_take, shot_web, shot_render) and presets.

You stay in control

  • Whenever the command line, an assistant, Shortcuts or a link takes a shot or starts a recording, a notice shows on screen, like “Screenshot taken by Claude (MCP)”. It never appears in the capture. Turn it off in Settings › General.
  • zumcast:// links that aren’t signed ask “Allow this request?” first.
  • Assistants can search your library only if you allow it in Settings › Organise.

Recording scripts

A recording script is a JSON file of steps (open, wait, click, hover, type, key, scroll) that ZumCast plays while it records, so a demo comes out the same every time. Run one with File › Run Script…, zumcast run or the run_script MCP tool.

Siri and Shortcuts

ZumCast adds actions to the Shortcuts app: Take Screenshot (area, window or display), Capture Text, Start Recording, Stop Recording and Open Hub. You can also say “Take a screenshot with ZumCast” or “Start recording with ZumCast” to Siri.
